
Tariq ibn Ziyad (known as the Founding Father of Andalusia) was a trusted Berber slave of North Africa’s Muslim governor, Musa bin Nusayr, who appointed Tariq governor of Tangier in 710. Tariq fought a Visigoth army led by King Roderic about three times bigger than his own, at the Battle of Guadalete in 711 and won a complete victory. He then proceeded to capture the Visigoth capital city of Toledo.
