I wholeheartedly support the Grand Imam of al-Azhar and the Chairman of Muslim Council of Elders’ statement denouncing the burning of the Holy Quran outside Stockholm’s central mosque on the day of Eid al-Adha.
Such acts reflect horrific hatred, unacceptable racism, and support for extremist ideology. An urgent and decisive action should be done to put an end to these offensive behaviors, rather than excusing them under the guise of free expression.
We condemn the burning of any holy scripture, including the Holy Quran, and acknowledge that freedom of expression should be utilized responsibly, with regard for others’ beliefs and sensibilities.
Governments, religious leaders, and civil society organizations must work together to encourage interfaith dialogue, combat Islamophobia, and promote understanding in order to create a world where religious freedom and peaceful coexistence are respected.
