In line with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, and the Muslim Council of Elders, I am deeply disappointed and disturbed by the actions of the organizers of the 2024 Olympics, who depicted a derogatory portrayal of the Last Supper in Christianity during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics.
The Last Supper is a sacred and significant event in Christianity tradition. The insensitive portrayal or use of this event not only offends the Christians but also contradicts the values of respecting and understanding the beliefs of other religions. In an increasingly global and multi-religious world, it is surprising that there are still those who fail to grasp the basics of living harmoniously side by side.
The Olympic Games should be a symbol of unity, peace, and understanding among various nations and cultures. Actions that insult or mock the religious beliefs of others are inconsistent with this spirit and will only fuel tensions and divisions.
At the same time, the influence of “queer” through the appearance of drag queens in the parody of the Last Supper also conveys an immoral message and the glorification of lust. This is certainly not the “message of love” defended by the organizers.
What hurts the hearts of the Christian community also undoubtedly hurts our hearts because Allah SWT has said:
“And you will surely find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, ‘We are Christians.’ That is because among them are priests and monks, and because they are not arrogant.”
(Surah al-Ma’idah: 82)
I also urge all parties involved in major international events to be more sensitive and cautious in handling religious issues. We all have a responsibility to promote tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect among all communities, regardless of religious or cultural backgrounds.
Let us work together to build a world that is more harmonious and respectful of each other, in accordance with the teachings of religions that prioritize love and peace.
