Allow me to share part of my journey of self-actualisation and learning the various Islamic knowledge, formally and informally.
My biggest concern and fear at the very beginning was anticipating how much I would uncover the real truths about myself. Because really, confronting our own sins and shortcomings is probably the most difficult thing we could do.
We’ve normalised many things in our own lives that when the truth slaps us in the face, we tend to resist or completely ignore it. We trap ourselves in denial. We tell ourselves, ok what, all this while, nothing bad had really happened to us anyway. We get to enjoy life, our rezeki is good, so we must be on the right path.
But we know there can only be ONE truth to hold on to in life. It’s whatever been decreed to be right and wrong by ALLAH SWT alone. And nothing else matters.
So, it might be difficult when we read a verse of the Quran or a Hadith that speaks directly about our shortcomings. But we ultimately need to confront it, and slowly attempt to correct our ways. Don’t point fingers at others? Point them straight at ourselves every single time.
Humble ourselves. And learn how to be better for the sake of Allah.
Of course, we will go back to certain wrongs again and again. We are not expected to be perfect, but we need to try and commit ourselves to being what is expected of us. Learn the knowledge that is obligatory on us (tauhid, fiqh, tasawwuf), do mujahadah (struggle against our own desires), and just ask Allah for ease and guidance. It’s not a walk in the park. But it’s a journey that promises great reward, for here and the hereafter. Insya Allah.
