Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan: Edisi Kuantan

By: Mymuslimin.com

Some trips are carefully planned. Others revolve entirely around food.

This particular Kuantan trip — done a couple of years back — falls firmly into the second category. With tips from Facebook friends and a little help from Google, we set out to explore the Pahang capital’s most recommended makan spots. Jom!

Mee Calong in Beserah

Our first-time experience with mee calong at Pak Mat Mee Calong, Beserah, hit all the right notes. It’s the kind of food that hugs you from the inside — soupy, hearty, and perfect for those who appreciate that rustic, kampung vibe. Definitely a family favourite. Alhamdulillah.

Ikan Bakar at Tanjung Lumpur

For dinner, we trusted Google and ended up at Pak Mail Ikan Bakar, located in Perkampungan Tanjung Lumpur. Let’s just say… Google did not disappoint. The seafood spread was glorious — grilled, juicy, and fresh from the sea. If you like your ikan bakar with the works, this one’s worth a pit stop.

Nasi Dagang Surprise!

Breakfast didn’t go as planned. We drove to a friend’s recommended spot, but it was closed. So I did what any Malaysian on a makan mission would do — drove aimlessly around Kuantan until something called out to me. And it did.

Total win: we stumbled upon what might just be one of the best nasi dagang we’ve ever had. Rich, fragrant, with gulai that made us pause and nod in respect. The nasi kerabu wasn’t too shabby either.

Keropok Lekor, Of Course

No East Coast food trip is complete without keropok lekor, and the ones we had here were the real deal — firm, chewy, and packed with fishy goodness. None of that overly-floury stuff you often find in the Klang Valley.

A Quick Detour to Pekan

On the way back to KL, I took a slight detour to Pekan just to check out Kafe Belibis, a unique spot I’d heard about — the one where you supposedly get to dine inside actual train cabins.

Did we get a seat inside the train? Nope. Fully booked that day. But no regrets — the place still charmed us with its kampung dishes, quiet vibe, and novelty factor. First visit, and definitely not the last.

Kuantan fed us well. From mee calong to nasi dagang, and an ikan bakar dinner that still haunts our dreams — this was one food trip that truly delivered. Even the unplanned bits turned out great. Isn’t that how the best makan trips usually go?
