Road Trip Diaries: What’s Good, Jeram?

By: Mymuslimin.com

Some days, you don’t plan anything big. You just fill up on petrol, start the engine, and let the road (and/or tolled-highway) decide the story. That’s exactly what happened when we drove to Jeram (approximately 60km from where we live) — a quiet little town in Selangor that isn’t trying to impress anyone, yet still wins you over.

Breakfast with Cats & A Plate of Honest Nasi Lemak

Our first stop wasn’t a hipster café or something straight out of Instagram. It was a simple warung kampung (recommended by google) with wooden tables, wooden benches, and that easy kampung vibe where everyone seemed to know everyone. A couple of cats wandered around, clearly part of the morning routine, slipping under tables and meowing for attention.

We ordered nasi lemak — humble in presentation, yet near-perfect in flavour. Fragrant coconut rice, a scoop of sweet-spicy sambal, tempe (yes!), crispy anchovies, roasted peanuts and ayam goreng. No fancy plating, no microgreens. Just good, honest nasi lemak, made better by the company of friendly cats padding about. At the next table, a couple of achik masjid (not that we’re young cikus) quietly flipped through actual printed newspapers — a rare, comforting sight in today’s screen-obsessed world.

Sasaran Art Gallery

With our stomachs happy, we cruised over to Sasaran Art Gallery Kuala Selangor. It’s an unusual sight — a contemporary art space standing in the middle of a fishing village. Inside, paintings, installations, and murals line the walls, creating a fascinating contrast between tradition and modern creativity. Some pieces made us think, some made us smile. The best part? It felt authentic, not like it was trying to be a “city gallery.” And there’s even more good stuff outside, perfect for a bit of OOTD poses.

Pantai Jeram

Later, we made our way to Pantai Jeram. To be honest, it’s not a picture-perfect beach — no powdery white sand, no turquoise waters. But there’s a kind of calm here that’s hard to put into words. The sea breeze carried that familiar salty scent, and the waves kept their steady rhythm. You can just sit here for a while and feel time moving slow.

Patin Tempoyak Stop in Klang

On the way back, we couldn’t resist a food stop. In Klang, we found ourselves at Pohpaleh Weh, a spot known for its patin tempoyak. The gravy was thick and rich, the fermented durian flavour perfectly balanced, and the patin itself was fresh. Every bite felt like a reward for the day’s drive. And yes — totally worth it.

Jeram may not be on the top tourist lists, but in a single day it gave us friendly cats, a memorable plate of nasi lemak, unexpected art, a peaceful beach, and a meal to remember. Sometimes, that’s all you really need to feel life is good.
