TODAY IN HISTORY – 18 August 636

On this day in 636 CE, the Battle of Yarmouk between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire began. Fighting took place near the Yarmouk River in the Jordan valley, and the battle was a decisive victory for the heavily outnumbered Rashidun army.

The Battle of the Yarmouk is regarded as one of the most decisive battles in military history, and it marked the first great wave of early Muslim conquests after the death of prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and permanently shifted the dominion in the Levant and Syria from the Byzantine Empire to the Caliphate.
